SYNOPSIS

This story is focused on the controversial cutting of trees in Mumbai’s Aarey forest in 2014. This event adversely impacted ecological balance, Mumbai’s air quality, local flora and fauna, and tribal communities.

Amid Mumbai’s towering skyscrapers and crowded slums, Hirva, a young Warli girl, finds a mysterious map in her grandmother’s box. Guided by an invisible spirit, she follows symbols through the city to a magical forest, where she meets a scarred leopard god and uncovers the painful history of her people's displacement. In this dialogue-free film, powerful imagery and music tell a story of loss, discovery, and inner strength.

Character Design: Hirva

Character Design: Hirva

Portraying a young girl from the Warli tribe as the film’s protagonist required thoughtful exploration of her character arc to bring her to life authentically. Imagined as a 6-year-old, her age reflected the story’s needs—capturing a delicate balance of innocence and curiosity, with a hint of mischief and quiet bravery.

The Grandmother

The Grandmother

The grandmother’s character was crucial to the narrative, guiding the storyline and requiring thoughtful design. She was envisioned as a grotesque, elderly figure—struggling to breathe in a polluted future, yet firmly holding onto her beliefs.

The Leopard

Aarey’s leopards, revered by local tribes as forest protectors, inspired the film’s leopard God—a semi-realistic, mystical figure adorned with Warli patterns. While worshipped in natural form, the God’s scarred, fierce look reflects real-life conflict, like attacks by leopard C-32, symbolizing the forest’s pain.

Storyboard

The main objective of the storyboarding phase was to seamlessly connect all the visuals across different time spans and art styles with the help of smooth transitions.

World Building

World-building balanced cultural authenticity with a futuristic tone, drawing from Mumbai’s skyline, crowded slums, and the dense Aarey Forest to reflect themes of displacement, survival, and the city’s fragile bond with nature.

SYNOPSIS

Funded by IRCC and directed by Prof. Swati Agarwal of IDC, IIT Bombay, this project is a five-minute stop-motion animation of the Hanuman Chalisa, aimed at children aged four to twelve. Written by Saint Tulsidas in the 16th century, the Hanuman Chalisa honors Lord Hanuman’s strength and devotion.

As the lead animator, I was responsible for bringing this vision to life with a small team, using clay animation to create a visually engaging experience, with Mr. Sudeep Shrivastava’s music as the backbone.

Song Breakdown

To honor the Hanuman Chalisa through animation, I first explored its meaning in depth. Guided by peers and Devdutt Pattanaik’s My Hanuman Chalisa, I then broke down the song into sections based on the mood of the music and key events, shaping the narrative flow.

Concept & Materials

Concept & Materials

A Hanuman sculpture comes to life, leaping through temple wall carvings that depict his story, in sync with the Chalisa’s chant. With temple architecture too vast to master fully, we focused on the basics and drew inspiration from existing structures.

Storyboard

We mapped the entire song breakdown on a wall to keep the structure visible and track progress. Using sticky note thumbnails, we visualized ideas in context, making it easy to spot connections, adjust quickly, and build our first storyboard draft.

Production

The animatic was split into nine sequences based on the video’s cuts to maintain continuity. This phased approach made production more manageable and led to a more efficient, tailored workflow.

DESCRIPTION

In this heartfelt six-minute film, wool itself becomes the storyteller, voicing the neglect it has suffered for generations. Once a sacred bond between humans, animals, and nature, wool now stands forgotten in the wake of urbanisation and industrial change.

We were responsible for animating all shots containing the main 'Oon' character.
